Mother Teresa (1910-1997), also known as Saint Teresa of Calcutta, was born in Skopje, present-day North Macedonia, and was baptized as Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu. She joined the Sisters of Loreto in Ireland in 1928 and was sent to India, where she taught at a school in Kolkata (then Calcutta). In 1946, she experienced a “call within a call” to leave the convent and serve the poorest of the poor, and began her work among the slums of Kolkata.

In 1950, she founded the Missionaries of Charity, a religious congregation dedicated to serving the poorest and sickest people in society. The organization grew rapidly, with branches established in over 130 countries, and Mother Teresa became a symbol of selfless service and compassion. She and her sisters offered care for the dying, orphaned children, and people suffering from leprosy, tuberculosis, and HIV/AIDS.

Mother Teresa received many honors for her humanitarian work, including the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. However, she also faced criticism for her views on poverty, charity, and healthcare, with some accusing her of promoting a “cult of suffering” and providing inadequate medical care to patients. She passed away in 1997 and was beatified by the Catholic Church in 2003. In 2016, she was canonized as a saint, recognized for her lifelong dedication to serving the poorest and most vulnerable members of society.

Mother Teresa was a soul filled with the light of Christ, on fire with love for Him and burning with one desire: “to quench His thirst for love and for souls.” she taught the lesson of love, humanity and the belief in god.  she was the youngest among the three children. mother teresa followed the message of love from her childhood itself. Her father died at the age of 8.with the influence of her mother and guidance of a priest, Agnes became more interested in missionary work.

Mother teresa, at the age of 12  strongly felt the call of God and decided to become  a missionary nun to spread the message of love and humanity . mother teresa, at the age of 17  responded to her first call of  vocation as a Catholic missionary nun. At the age of eighteen she left her home and joined the Sisters of Loreto, an Irish community of nuns ,which has missionaries in India. she took her vows as a Sister of Loretto,where she recieved the name  sister mary teresa after Saint Thérèse of Lisieux.

After a few months’ training in Dublin she was sent to India. mother teresa took her initial vows as a nun om may24 1931. From 1931 to 1948 Mother Teresa taught at St. Mary’s High School in Calcutta.mother terasa could no longer continue her teaching,as the suffering,helpless and the poverty outside the convent walls made a deep impact on her heart. In 1948,mother teresa left the convent and decided to devote herself to work among the  poor in the slums of Calcutta.

On October 7, 1950, Mother Teresa received permission  to start her own order, “The Missionaries of Charity”, whose  task was to love and care for those persons who are unwanted and have no one to look after them.The Missionaries of Charity throughout the world are aided with number of Co-Workers and became an official International Association on March 29, 1969. By the 1990s there were over one million Co-Workers in more than 40 countries
By 1996, mother teresa was operating 517 missions in more than 100 countries.
